Home Ownership - Newport News, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg

Habitat for Humanity builds and sells affordable housing to low- and moderate-income families. Construction or renovation of each Habitat house is a cooperative effort between volunteers, house sponsors and the buyer(s) of the house. Participating families provide at least 300 hours (called sweat equity) toward building their own and other families' homes. Homes are purchased with a zero-interest equivalent, 20 to 30-year mortgage.

Camp - Virginia Beach, Camp Hope Haven, The Union Mission Ministries

Camp Hope Haven offers an overnight summer camp for children from across Hampton Roads, many of them from the inner city. Activities include swimming, horseback riding, sports, games, arts and crafts, and Bible study. A gymnasium provides an outlet for fun and excitement on rainy days. Donor-funded CHH sponsorships often cover all the costs for low-income families that cannot afford to send their children to camp.

Foster Care - Charlottesville, Community Attention

Provides a network of therapeutic foster homes for children 8 to 18 years of age. This treatment foster care program is for children in the community who don't need to be in a group home, but need more attention and support than is provided by traditional foster care. Youth and families benefit from extra support and supervision. The program is able to accept emergency placements and to provide long term foster care leading to permanency.
